How to Play Volleyball: A Beginner's Guide
Volleyball is a game that requires your full involvement so it is definitely perfect for those who are sociable. I am an avid volleyball player and fan and thus, I am glad to share my thoughts on this amazing game. The following is a step-by-step guide that will help you learn everything about volleyball starting from its basics to its fundamental rules, game play and necessary skills that are needed to be learned initially.
Understanding the Basics
Volleyball is a fast team game which can be played both indoor and outdoor. The primary objective is to hit the ball over the net into the opposing team's court without letting it touch the ground on your side. Here are some key things to keep in mind:
- There are six players on each court for each team.
- The players are arranged in two rows: three are on the front side and three are on the back side.
- The game starts off with a serve when the servers are behind the back line.
- Mini-skirts have up to three hits to send the ball back over the net.
- Points are gained when either a ball falls on the opponent's court or the opposite team makes a mistake.
Fundamental Rules
Playing volleyball the right way is always closely linked with learning and subsequently strictly complying with the basic regulations as follows:
- Each completion must be from behind the service line.
- The ball cannot be played by one person two times in a row.
- Releasing and adjusting the ball with the hand is against the rules and very much must be picked up by a clean hit.
- The arms and hands can only be used in playing the ball.
- Good volleyball players avoid making contact with the ball on the other side of the net.
Essential Skills
These five skills are my basic advice for beginners to the volleyball field:
- Serving: Beginning the game by sending the ball over the net from the back line.
- Passing: Directing the ball towards the team-mate, often by using the forearms.
- Setting: Placing the ball in a position that can allow the hitter to attack, usually, by just lifting it with the fingertips.
- Spiking: The act of hitting the ball forcefully over the net into the opponent's court.
- Blocking: The act of jumping at the net to block the opponent's attack from crossing.
Scoring and Winning
Volleyball is a sport where two teams try to win sets by getting 25 points with a lead of at least two points. A standard match is won by the team that wins 2 out of 3 sets. The third set is often played to 15 points if necessary.
Equipment Needed
Starting to play volleyball will require essentials such as this:
- Volleyball
- web and two poles
- athletic stuff or dress
- Optional: knee pads for protection from harm when diving
Conclusion
Volleyball is a fulfilling and enjoyable sport that gives you a physical workout and interaction with friends.
